This Week in Disney History :: May 21 - May 27

May 21:

  • 1933: Disney add another ‘Old Man’ as A 23-year-old artist named Wolfgang Reitherman is hired at the Disney Studio in Hollywood, California. "Woolie" as he will be nicknamed, will start work in June and go on to become one of Walt's legendary Nine Old Men
  • 1954: ‘Pigs is Pigs’ is released. One of Disney’s first forays in to the stylized limited animation of the Day, this Ward Kimball project would go on to earn an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Short.
  • 1998: The ‘New’ Tomorrowland opens in Disneyland to a universally mediocre response. The once grand ‘Tomorrowland 2055’ theme had been budget cut down to ‘Montana of the Future’ where all the plants were edible (yes, that really is the back story!). The centerpiece attraction, the Rocket Rods, would prove so prone to breakdown, that they would close less than two years later.

May 22:

  • 1968: The Walt Disney Travel Co. is founded.
  • 1999: The lights went dark on SpectroMagic in the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World as the parade had it’s final performance ever. Final never being forever in the World of Disney, the parade would return two years later.
  • 2005: Voice actor, singer and Disney Legend Thurl Ravenscroft passes away at age 91 in Fullerton, California. Best known as the voice of Kellogg's Tony the Tiger, Ravenscroft's numerous Disney credits include 101 Dalmatians, Alice in Wonderland, The Aristocats, and Cinderella. He can also be heard in such Disney theme park attractions as Pirates of the Caribbean, The Haunted Mansion, and Country Bear Jamboree.

May 23:

  • 1922: Walt Disney formed Laugh-O-Gram films.
  • 1983: Only 2 months after opening, the one millionth guest visited Tokyo Disneyland.
  • 1997: Light Magic officially opens at Disneyland This nighttime "streetacular" -- which was rumored to have cost $40 million -- featured dozens of dancers in colorful fairy costumes, Irish folk music, Disney characters in their pajamas, fiber optics, confetti cannons. The parade was a streetacular failure and close soon thereafter.
  • 2001: The Magic Carpets of Aladdin takes flight at WDW's Magic Kingdom In this Mediterranean twist on the "Dumbo" ride, 16 flying carpets revolve around a genie's bottle. The four seater carpets allow the person in the front seat to adjust the up and down movement while back seat riders can tilt the carpet forward or back a bit. As you fly, two comical camels 'spritz' a little water in your general direction.

May 25:

  • 1955: "Davy Crockett: King of the Wild Frontier" is released to theaters spurring a phenomena with American children and widespread panic among raccoons.
  • 1983: The New Fantasyland opens at Disneyland. Gone was the medieval fair theme and in its place was a wonderful world of castles, english cottages, and stately mansions for amphibians.

May 27:

  • 1933: The Silly Symphony, ‘Three Little Pigs’ is released. The movie was phenomenally successful with audiences of the day, so much that theaters ran the cartoon for months after its debut. A number of theaters added hand-drawn "beards" to the movie posters for the cartoon as a way of indicating how long its theatrical run lasted.
  • 1977: Space Mountain had it's Grand Opening Ceremony at Disneyland. It is the second ride from Walt Disney World to be cloned for Walt’ original Theme Park.
  • 1992: The Sequoia Lodge hotel opened at Euro Disneyland.
